The common grenadine prefers the arid and semi arid places, particularly acacia forests and dry forests. It's present throughout southern Africa, particularly Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Its length varies from a maximum of 15 cm for males to 13.5 cm for females. The male is characterized by its very dark blue long pointed tail. The body is brown with purple cheeks and forehead blue, red beak and chin black. The female has less bright colors and the part of the body including the chin, its color is more tenuous in the male and is tending to deep sand.
The diet of grenadine is made of grains of panic, canary seed, millet straw, red millet, niger and small insects.
The breeding period starts from August to December/January with an average of 2 to 3 broods per season. For the difficulty of breeding is not recommended to farmers with little experience.
