The Cut-throat is present throughout the south-Saharan Africa to South Africa with the exception of areas covered with tropical forests, preferring open areas or dry semidesert.
The birds vary considerably from place of origin. Generally, birds coming from the East Africa are more shades of gray and dull. There are 4 subspecies. The common identification of this species shows drawings of fish scales and bones on the basis of sand-colored plumage. The male also differs in the characteristic of a red crescent placed on the throat.
The diet of Cut-throat is composed of grains of panic, canary seed, millet, white, red millet, niger and small insects.
The captive breeding may occur in the winter if conditions are ideal: temperatures of 15 to 25 degrees and light to 16/17 hours a day. The average brood is 2 / 3 season.
